Kerri and I went into the Pink City and stopped to see the Hawa Mahal. The queens of the Rajputs (kings) would stay in this building to watch the world go by. There’s a huge market there, so we did a bit of shopping. We also got to stop into Jaipur’s first coffee house, a place where academics traditionally meet and, in the words of Kerri, “pontificate.” There’s smoking allowed in the coffee houses. We had some good South Indian food there. I may not have mentioned this yet, but I’ve had some great food since I’ve come here.
We just got back from a beautiful place called Ladli. I’ll remember this place for a long time. Ladli is a place where street kids can go to get some vocational skills and a bit of education. The girls make beautiful jewelry and the boys work on handicrafts. I, of course, love to shop at these kinds of places, because you know that the money is going to something that’s really going to make a difference in these kids lives. I’d like to see more of these kinds of places pop up in India.
Can’t believe I only have a few days left before I come back to Denver!
